God Father

For years, this movie had topped many best-loved movies list, I am sure. With a strong, good script, great casting, excellent acting, and over the top directing it is hard to fine a movie done this well in the popular genre. It's not just about the mafia but really about family, loyalty, greed, relationships, and real life. This is a great mix, and the artistic style make the film truly special. And, the right balancing of art with commerce -- and turning a big-studio project into something deeply personal and resonant is an achievement itself.

Coppola never does rush his scenes. It is rather slow and sedate. I was struck, for example, being a 'mafia film', by the relative gentility of it, with its noticeable restraint on bloodshed, There is a lot of thought and a decided maturity behind it. Its somberness -- its gnawingly melancholy -- is what's really shocking.
